Materials Engineering Centre (MEC)
The Materials Engineering Centre (MEC) was a fast-track new build project that took just 18 months from inception to completion in October 2018.
The MEC created more research space for applications-driven, “engineering scale” research into multi-materials and hybrid structures. This allowed for new collaborative opportunities with our business partners, bringing benefits to the local economy.
The MEC is a key facility for the Global Research Priority in Materials and contributes to the Energy, Innovative Manufacturing and Sustainable Cities priorities. It supports WMGLink opens in a new window in their Research Technology Platforms objective to provide a significant increase in research infrastructure.
The facility includes a double height 850m2 engineering hall plus laboratories, workshops, staff and teaching space totalling 1,200m2 on three floors. The largest proportion of the funding for this £10m+ project was from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)Link opens in a new window.
This building is based in the Academic Square area of campus, alongside the IIPSI, IINM and NAIC facilities.
