Team : Wellbeing- Disability Services
Involved Stakeholders: relevant academic staff, senior managers, Dean of students, heads of departments, student participants
Project : Considerate marking adjustment review
Format : Focus groups and student role holders
Length of project/engagement : 6 months
Why this approach: we wanted students to be involved in both the assessment of the current process, suggestions for anything new or different as well as be able to shape what happens next through employment on the project.
Involvement
Staff Involvement:
Project lead- management of direction of project, and supporting student role holders
Approx. 90% of workload over 3 months
40% of this was managing student role holders
Material creation- approximately 3 hours to create guides, materials and web pages
Stakeholder consultation-
Review meeting- 2 hours, reviewing the project so far
Changes recommendation- 1 hour meeting, confirming proposed changes and timeline
Students:
Students were recruited through the disabled student newsletter, or shared through student contacts within the department.

1 hour in length
Remuneration: Love2Shop voucher £15
Support: Shared information sheets ahead of the focus groups

Benchmark against sector-wide approaches
Identify and address issues such as lack of clarity, inconsistent use, and outdated terminology
Co-create updated guidance and resources for staff and students
Improve inclusivity and transparency in assessment practices

Changed the name from Marking Label to Considerate Marking Adjustment
Created a video for staff and students to better understand how the adjustment works
Developed new guidance document for both staff and students
Updated web pages and created printed materials to support best practice
Working with Students
Student workers
Recruitment: recruited through the disabled student newsletter or shared through student contacts within the department
Induction: several meetings to update students, and showcase where and how they could be involved
Post type : non-recurring, short-term post only for 3 months (length of the project)
Student officer x2 (approx. 8 hrs p/wk)
Length in role: 3 months, total 100hrs work
Responsibilities:
Conducting primary and secondary research
Suggest improvements to process
Contributed to writing final documents
Design and contribute towards video production
Remuneration: Grade 4 Band 16
Support structures: Regular check-in meetings
