Converting and Transcribing Materials

This work involves making information accessible so that it is in the required format for a student to read.

For example, it may be necessary to scan and convert a book into a Word document for someone who is visually impaired, if an electronic version is not available from the publisher.

The Library has copies of Kurzweil 1000 which is an assistive software package that converts printed material to electronic Word documents. It produces high quality conversions and has many features which allow for automatic appending of scans and re-oriention of pages.

You will find more informaion on how to use Kurzweil here. You can make an appointment with the Library and they will give you an overview of Kurzweil.

There are copies of Kurzweil in the Assistive Technology Area on the first floor of the Library and in some of the quiet individual study rooms.

Once the materials have been scanned it is important that the resulting documents are edited to check for errors and to format them so they can be successfully navigated by screen readers. please see the creating accessible resources page for further details.
