Managing Difficult Emotions

  • Understanding our emotions improves our ability to make choices which is linked to improved well-being and happiness. During this group, you will learn skills that are proven to be effective in dealing with stress, regulating emotions and expressing your emotions to others effectively. Learning how to manage difficult emotions reduces suffering and paves the way for an authentic life.
  • The aim of these sessions is to teach you skills that you can apply to your day-to-day life. This is an experiential, skills learning group. We will meet for 6 consecutive weeks and each meeting will be 90 minutes long.

  • There are four skills modules to learn in relation to regulating difficult emotions:

Mindfulness: Being aware of the present moment without judgement

Distress Tolerance: Getting through crisis situations without making things worse and accepting reality, as it is.

Emotion Regulation: Understanding and reducing vulnerability to emotions and changing unwanted emotions.

Interpersonal Effectiveness: Meeting interpersonal objectives, maintaining relationships and increasing self-respect in relationships.

  • Students interested in this group should discuss this with the person they are currently working with e.g. Wellbeing Advisor, Psychological Therapist, Mental Health Nurse, Disability Advisor, Mentor etc. They may then be offered a place at a pre-group session with other students interested in joining the group. This will be an opportunity to decide, with a group facilitator, whether it is a suitable option
