Be aware of scams
Unfortunately, students are often targeted by scammers, and this can be particularly common at the start of the academic year. It is therefore really important to remain vigilant, check communications and seek advice if you are unsure.
Scams can take different forms including via text message, WhatsApp, email, or phone call. Scammers may claim to be from different companies such as HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) or the Student Loan company and they can also pretend to be other legitimate organisations such as the Home Office or the police.
Over the last few days there has been a HMRC scam targeting students – please be aware of this and do not respond to any requests for money. View advice on how to identify a HMRC scam message.
Spotting a scam message
Scammers often send communications that look very legitimate. There are some key things to look out for that may help you work out if something is a scam:
- You’re contacted out of the blue.
- You’re asked for money.
- You’re asked to make an immediate decision.
- You’re asked to keep something quiet.
- You’re asked for personal details.
- A deal sounds too good to be true.
- No contact details are given to you.
What to do if you think you have been scammed or need advice
If you do fall victim to a scam, contact the University’s Community Safety team immediately by calling 024 7652 2222, and they will talk through the process for reporting to Action Fraud.
If you are unable to determine if a communication is genuine, do not respond or click links. Look up the real contact information for the company or organisation and contact them directly, or contact our Community Safety team (call 024765 22083) and they will be able to advise you.
