Update following government announcement - 29 November

Following the discovery of the new Omicron strain of Covid-19, the government has announced that from Tuesday 30 November:

  • Face coverings will be mandatory in shops and on public transport.
  • All contacts of suspected Omicron cases will be required to self-isolate for 10 days, regardless of a person's vaccination status.
  • Anyone entering the UK will require a PCR test within 48 hours of arrival and will need to self-isolate until they have a negative result.

The government is taking these precautions until scientists can assess what the new variant’s impact could be and will review the changes again in three weeks’ time.

What does this mean on campus?

From Tuesday 30 November, face coverings are compulsory in Rootes Grocery store and on public transport.

In other spaces on campus, guidance is as follows:

  • Teaching, research and non-library-managed study spaces - you are expected to wear a face covering when you are moving around and when you are sitting down.
  • You're expected to wear a face covering when you're moving around in the Library and associated study spaces, but you can remove your face covering when seated.
  • There will be no requirement for face coverings or social distancing in cafes or conference spaces on campus, nor in the Warwick Arts Centre or the Sports and Wellness Hub. This is in accordance with government and sector-specific guidance. You're free to wear face coverings and practise social distancing in these spaces if you'd prefer to.

What else can I do to keep myself and others safe?

  • Get vaccinated and have a booster when you’re eligible.
  • Make sure you download the NHS Covid-19 app to allow for effective contact tracing.
  • Get tested if you experience any Covid-19 symptoms and let us know if you test positive.
  • Take twice weekly lateral flow tests.
  • Keep up to date with what’s going on by checking your email regularly, following our social media channels and keeping an eye on MyWarwick.

Hear from Warwick Virologist, Professor Lawrence Young on why wearing a face covering is so important to limit the transmission of Covid-19 and reduce your risk of exposure.

Please be considerate of those around you and ensure that you follow the latest guidance to keep our community on campus safe.
