Evaluating Public Engagement: One-Day Workshop

Monday 9th February 2026, 10am-3:30pm - Gibbet Hill Academic Building

Join us for a full-day interactive workshop designed to equip you with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to evaluate your public engagement activities effectively. This hands-on session will guide you through the strategic, practical, and analytical aspects of evaluation, combining the content of our previous seminar series into a cohesive learning experience.

Lunch: Please note catering is not provided. Feel free to bring your own or enjoy nearby options during the lunch break.

Workshop Overview

Throughout the day, we’ll explore three interconnected modules:

1. Introduction to Evaluation Strategy, Methods and Practice

  • Understand the purpose and value of evaluation in public engagement.

  • Learn how to think strategically about your activities.

  • Define your own measures of success and explore a framework for planning evaluation.

2. Practical Evaluation Tools and Resources

  • Discover practical tools to help you design and conduct meaningful evaluations.

  • Explore available resources and how to apply them to your own engagement work.

  • Learn how to align tools with your success measures.

3. Understanding and Presenting Data

  • Examine the types of data you can collect through evaluation.

  • Learn basic techniques for analysing and interpreting data.

  • Gain insights into how to present findings to demonstrate impact and inform future practice.

About the trainer

Dr Ellie King is a visitor experience and evaluation consultant, working across the museums and heritage sectors. An expert in evaluation and interpretation, she has supported multiple teams to develop, deliver, and evaluate high quality public engagement experiences in both the UK and the US. She is currently translating her PhD thesis into a handbook for evaluation for the heritage sector.

Last Minute Cancellations/ No Shows

This session is subject to our training cancellation policy. If you can no longer attend you must give at least 7 days notice to cancel your place or else receive a strike on your record. Those with two strikes will be barred from future training and WIE Funding until the following academic year.
