Engagement with Sensitive Topics - Online Masterclass
Wednesday, 18th June 1:00 - 3:30pm and Thursday, 18th September 10:00 - 12:30pm.
Please note you do not need to attend both sessions as they will cover the same material.
If you work with a topic that might be sensitive, triggering, or controversial then doing public engagement with your work can sometimes feel challenging. How can you balance the importance of talking about this work with the difficulties of handling those discussions sensitively? This session will help to support anyone who feels their work could be considered sensitive or controversial, but will particularly draw from examples of social science research.
The session will cover:
- What makes a topic sensitive or controversial?
- Why we should engage with difficult topics
- Case studies of engagement activities
- Time for attendees to explore sensitive aspects of their own work, and think about activity ideas which address the topics they are most worried about
- Practical tips on preparing for events and handling unexpected difficult situations
- Considering your own boundaries at engagement events and working through scenarios you may face
