About

Dr Marguerite Spoerri Butcher studied History, Archaeology and German at the University of Neuchâtel in Switzerland. After graduating, she became curator of the Numismatic Department at the Musée d'art et d'histoire in Neuchâtel from 1991 to 1999. During that time, she organized several exhibitions and conferences, was an active member of the Swiss Group for Coin Finds (SAF/GSETM) and the Swiss Numismatic Society and completed her PhD at the University of Neuchâtel. Since then, she has been working on several research projects for institutions such as the Swiss School of Archaeology in Greece or the Münzkabinett in Winterthur and taught in various contexts both in the UK and abroad.

In 2024, she has joined Jerome Mairat and Volker Heuchert as one of the directors of RPC online.

Research interests

My main focus of interest is the provincial coinage of the Roman Empire. In my PhD, I investigated the coinage of Gordian III (238-244) minted in the province of Asia. Aspects I am more specifically interested in include iconography, organisation of the coin production and institutional aspects. More recently, I have started to focus on patterns of coin circulation in Greece during the Roman period and have extended the geographical scope of my investigation to North Africa (coinage of Juba II).

I am involved in a number of numismatic research projects:
