Three contact hours per week: Mondays 9-11 (Room H2.44, second floor of Humanities building) and Tuesdays 3-4 (H1.02)
PLEASE NOTE THE FIRST CLASS WILL BE TUESDAY OCTOBER 2ND, 3PM.
On Mondays, we will focus on reading, understanding and interpreting the set texts (beginning with Virgil Aeneid 12 in term 1 - BE SURE TO BRING YOUR TEXTS!!); in the Tuesday classes, we will work through grammar topics, and practice unprepared translation, mostly of the complementary texts. Throughout the term, we will do regular vocabulary tests and grammar quizzes, and students will give presentations on topics related to the term's set text at or towards the end of each term.
Students are expected to prepare work at home in advance of the classes: you will need to prepare sections of the set texts before each Monday class (so that the class itself can be spent on refining translations, discussing difficult linguistic points, matters of style and interpretation); and you will have grammar and translation homework in advance of each Tuesday class.
Material for the grammar classes will be provided in class and on the module site, but it is essential that you bring to class the edition of your set text (for Mondays), plus (for all classes) a Latin grammar and a Latin dictionary of your choice. See Syllabus tab for recommendations.
