Long essay proposed title: The history of global diplomacy and the standardisation of the practise of international relations

Starting from the end of the Napoleonic Wars, until the present, this long essay proposes to examine whether international relations and diplomacy has experienced a standardisation into a uniform set of conventions and practises adopted across the world. Essential to this exercise is a consideration of how consequential evolving forms of bilateral and multilateral frameworks of cooperation, from treaties and international conventions to the creation of supranational institutions such as the United Nations and the European Union, have facilitated this evolution in global diplomatic practise, and more significantly, their influence in shaping economic and foreign policy of individual nation states.

The long essay would draw upon some primary sources, including, but not limited to:

  • The Acts of the Congress of Vienna 1814-15
  • The Treaty of Versailles 1919
  • Charter of the United Nations 1945
  • Maastricht Treaty 1993
