French 3 for finalists (LL336)

Level

Prerequisite: prior knowledge of French
• A2 of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference)
• or a high grade in GCSE or equivalent
• or equivalent in International Baccalaureate
• or Language Centre French 2 or Beginners Accelerated
• or equivalent

Main Objectives
  • To improve reading and writing skills listening and speaking skills
  • To improve fluency when spending time in a French-speaking environment.
Credits

30 CREDITS.

Teaching and Learning
  • One weekly blended session for 21 weeks consisting of a two-hour face-to-face class on campus 
  • Four online workshops, each lasting ninety minutes, spread across terms 1 and 2
  • Some independent study will also be set  

Students will take part in an online exchange with the Université Clermont Auvergne, Clermont-Ferrand, France.

If health & safety restrictions are required, teaching may move online. 

Students are reminded that 1 credit = 10 hours of study, therefore for a 30 credit module, the minimum expected amount of study is 300 hours, which averages over 10 hours per week. A substantial amount of independent study is therefore required. Students can make use of Moodle to facilitate this.

Assessment

Term 1: one interim test (10%)

Term 3: one reading/writing test (35%) + one speaking test (40%) + one independent project (15%)

    Course Description

    This module will give students the chance to spend some time learning and reinforcing the basics of the French language. It will offer an opportunity for students not specialising in foreign languages to improve their communicative competence in French as a supplement to their studies in other spheres.

    This module will also help students develop a critical understanding of cultural contexts, analytical and reflective abilities in cross-cultural settings, as well as autonomous learning and effective resource management.

    For those students intending to travel to France or French-speaking countries, either for study or work placements, the module can work as a refresher and promote confidence-building for communicating with native speakers abroad.

    Learning Outcomes

    By the end the module, students should be able to:

    • apply knowledge of grammar appropriate to the level
    • understand the main points on matters regularly encountered
    • understand texts dealing with descriptions of events and feelings, and with work-related language
    • enter unprepared into conversation, describe experiences and events and give reasons for opinions
    • produce text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest
    • Critically analyse and reflect on cultural contexts, demonstrating enhanced intercultural and cross-cultural competencies
    • Conduct and present independent research into Francophone-speaking culture(s) and society(ies)
    • Self-monitor and self-regulate their own learning and manage resources. 

    By the end of the course, students should be able to perform many tasks at Level B1 Independent user (threshold) of the Common European Framework.

    Syllabus

    This module will allow you/students to develop strategies for self-directed and autonomous learning, as well as an understanding of diverse cultural contexts and the ability to engage with and communicate on them thoughtfully and respectfully. 

    The syllabus will include the following:

    Topics

    Items such as describing people, social relations, work, employment, consumerism, the French language and multiculturalism, the media, the environment, art and tourism.

    Grammar

    Items such as consolidation and revision of essential basic structures including present and past tenses, adjectives, object pronouns and relative pronouns, future and conditional tenses, the subjunctive and the passive voice.
