Congratulations to Em. Prof. Ann Caesar on being awarded a Leverhulme Trust Emeritus Fellowship!

Congratulations to Em. Prof. Ann Caesar on being awarded a Leverhulme Trust Emeritus Fellowship for her project The Rise and evolution of the modern Italian novel in eighteenth-century Venice. The project will run from October 2017 until January 2019. Prof. Caesar writes:

The focus of my research is to establish the routes whereby a modern novel, in a broadly transnational sense, developed in Italian in the eighteenth century in the socio-cultural conditions specific to Venice. The properties of this new genre were determined both by the influence of English and French novels that circulated in the first half of the century and were much translated, adapted and imitated and by interaction with contemporary theatre and journalism in Venice. An analysis of a selection of novels published between 1753 and 1784 will trace the rise, evolution and decline of this new narrative form.
