Frugal Science: From paper centrifuges to hearing aids to vaccine delivery patchesC0.02 IAS Seminar RoomDr Saad Bhamla, Georgia Tech Thursday 1st of February | 13.00 - 14.00 | C0.02 IAS Seminar Room In this talk, I will share our philosophy of frugal science, on building accessible and affordable tools for global health. I will discuss three examples of devices that all cost less than a cup of coffee (<$1). I will share how we designed a paper centrifuge for malaria diagnostics inspired by a children’s toy, a hearing aid built by open electronics for presbycusis, and finally, a nucleic acid vaccine delivery device inspired by a BBQ-lighter. Toward the end, I will share some comments on translating these devices for field studies in human users as well as through startups for commercialization.
