Prizes and Sources of Funding in French Studies
Prizes for postgraduate essays and conference papers
- The Society for French Studies (Gapper Prize)
- the SFS's PG essay prize gives its award holders high visibility in the field of French Studies in the UK.
- The American-based association Women in French (WIF)
- The Society for Caribbean Studies awards the biennial David Nicholls Prize to the author of the best postgraduate paper delivered to the Society for Caribbean Studies annual conferences.
- The Society of Dix-Neuviémistes awards a Postgraduate Prize for the best postgraduate conference paper submitted for the Society's Annual Conference.
- The Nineteenth-Century French Studies Association offers the Naomi Schor Memorial Award for the best essay by a graduate student giving a presentation at the Association's annual meeting.
- The North American Society for the Study of Romanticism offers prizes for the best graduate papers read at their annual conference. Submissions must be made well in advance of the conference: check the website for details.
- The British Society for the History of Philosophy
awards a biennial Graduate Student Essay Prize to the writer of an essay that makes a significant contribution to the history of philosophy.
Other awards, scholarships and prizes facilitating or rewarding research in specialist areas
- The Association for the Study of Modern and Contemporary France (Peter Morris Memorial Postgraduate Travel Prize)
- The Political Studies Association awards the Harrison Prize for the best paper published in their journal Political Studies. It also offers prizes for the best dissertations (PhD theses) as well as teaching awards, including one for the best new entrant in the profession.
- The Fondation Napoléon
encourages the study of the First and Second Empires by awarding six research grants to six French or non-French students in the first year of their PhD (or MPhil intending to go on to PhD) on a First or Second Empire subject.
- The Voltaire Foundation manages the Owen Taylor Research Fund to facilitate research on eighteenth-century French Studies. "The Fund awards grants to research students and lecturers to enable them to travel to foreign libraries and archives and to acquire any necessary research materials (other than books)." Deadline 1 May.
- The Institut International Charles Perrault runs a competition, in association with the town of Eaubonne, for the best unpublished, critical article on children's literature (usual deadline July).
- The International Research Society for Children's Literature offers a grant of US $1000 to encourage research by young/new scholars of children's literature; applications are welcome from any postgraduate students or young colleagues in the field. Eligible activities include literary, historical, cultural, sociological, empirical or pedagogical research. (usual deadline: March).
- The Huguenot Scholarship
