Researching early French and English melodrama through performance
In 2014, the French Theatre of the Napoleonic era project teamed up with the Music in London 1800-1849 project at KCL to run a workshop on Pixerécourt's La Forteresse du Danube (1805) and its English adaptation The Fortress by Hook & Hook.
The workshop's coordinators, Katherine Astbury, Katherine Hambridge and Jonathan Hicks have produced a documentary reflecting on the provisional conclusions about the differences between early English and French melodrama that came out of the performance-based research. It can be viewed here(published December 2017).
If you are short of time you may prefer the video of our provisional findings which premiered at the IFTR conference held at Warwick in the summer of 2014.
