I had the immense pleasure of being taught by Victor during my last year as an undergraduate - incidentally also one of his last years teaching - on Jean Renoir and Max Ophüls. Not only did I witness some of the finest films ever made, but I also witnessed some of the finest teaching too.
His approach to looking and thinking about film is beyond compare. There’s textual analysis and then there’s Victor’s kind of close reading, which is the backbone of my own work (now as a PhD candidate). Kind, patient, and generous in the way all good teachers are, I learned so much from him, inside and outside of the classroom setting. He leaves behind such a rich body of work for us to read, re-read, and read again.
