What were you doing before you started your studies at Warwick?
I studied Natural Sciences (BSc) at Exeter University for three years.
Why did you choose to study at Warwick? What were your first impressions?
The flexibility of the course. I was able to choose what modules I wanted to study and really tailor the degree to my interests. The University was close to where I lived at the time. I was extremely impressed with the vast number of facilities available at Warwick. The level of organisation for events/open days versus previous experiences I had at other Universities was impressive.
What was your favourite module?
[The] 24-week Research Project. I was given the flexibility to find my own tutor and my own project. I looked at the different areas of science I was interested in and was able to create my own research project tailored to where I wanted to take my career at the time (into teaching).
What was the standout facility for you?
…The Chemistry Department common room/area. It felt like a safe space to come and work, to spend time with friends and to have lectures in.
What was your favourite memory?
The weekly lectures that we could attend, catch up with friends (and have some free lunch!). All of my modules were seperate to the Chemistry student’s so it was a great way to see them every week.
What are you doing now? How has your experience at Warwick helped?
I have had the below roles since finishing my Masters degree. All at the same company - MMR Research.
- Trainee Research Executive (Sept 2018 - June 2019)
- Research Executive (June 2019 - July 2020)
- Senior Research Executive (July 2020 - October 2020)
- Business Analyst (Will be moving into this role in October 2020)"
The 'research project' aspect of my course was a large talking point when applying for my first job. I had experience conducting research, in particular, carrying out my own focus groups which really [lent] itself well to me getting the research executive role.
What would you say to a prospective student?
If the course is for you, go for it. You will have lots of support available to you, great facilities around you and the opportunity to make life-long friends. The Chemistry department will listen to your career goals and do everything they can to help you on the journey to getting there.
