Andrew Lunn

Chemistry with Scientific Writing, 2014-2015

What were you doing before you started your studies at Warwick?

I was working as a pharmacist.

Why did you choose to study at Warwick? What were you first impressions?

I chose to study at warwick because of its research reputation, particularly in material science and polymeric materials. I also was helped through the process and made to feel welcome at every stage, more than at other prestigious institutions. I also applied for and received a scholarship for my MSc course. I was lost and a bit overwhelmed to be honest! It was a really nice campus, but I had no idea where I was going. Once I had been with my cohort for a few days though I felt relaxed and at home though.

What was your favourite module?

Well the module I enjoyed more than I thought was the statistics module. It's not something I’m particularly good at, but it was taught really well, and the cohort helped each other out. It has also been useful to have a grounding in stats in everything I have done since.

What was the standout facility for you?

The provision in Senate House was great, having work and social space really helped to separate work and leisure. Also having really great support staff in the same building was super helpful.

What is your favourite memory of Warwick?

Making connections and lifelong friends.

What are you doing now? How has your experience with Warwick helped?

I went on to complete a PhD in the Chemistry department at Warwick with Sebastien Perrier. I am now a pharmacy and pharmaceutics lecturer at the University of Central Lancashire. To complete a PhD in the area I was interested in I needed to develop my chemistry skills, the scientific writing element has also massively helped in aspects of my PhD and later employment. I needed a PhD to become a lecturer, and ultimately the MSc course facilitated that and made me a better candidate.

What would you say to a prospective student?

I would suggest that if they are resolute that they want to undertake an MSc or DTC course, that Warwick is a great place to undertake it. If your experience was like mine, you will have a great time and learn a lot.

What were the main skills you learnt?

What words sum up your experience at Warwick?
