"Turning Linear Peptides into Constrained Drugs", Satish K NairLink opens in a new window

Bacterial natural products represent one of the major avenues towards the discovery and development of novel drugs including antibiotics, antifungals, and anticancer agents. Ribosomally synthesized and post-translationally modified peptides (RiPPs) encompass a wide variety of chemical scaffolds with an array of biological activities. These compounds are synthesized as linear peptides on the ribosome and then undergo modifications that confers bioactivities. Our lab focuses on structural biological and biochemical studies of the enzymes involved in biosynthesis of various RiPPs. Our goal is to exploit the substrate tolerances of these enzymes and pathways to produce compounds new to nature
