WATE success for Nick Barker

Nick-WATE

Nick studied Chemistry at Bristol University before gaining a PGCE and teaching science and A-level Chemistry for 12 years. He worked in non-selective state secondary schools and was a Head of Year and a school governor. In 2008 he was awarded one of a small number of highly prestigious Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) Teacher Fellowships which allowed him to come to Warwick University’s Chemistry Department. Given freedom to do whatever he wished that would serve the best interests of Chemistry, he chose to start an Outreach programme to inspire school students and their teachers. Although the funding from the RSC was temporary, the University of Warwick realised his tremendous talent and outstanding efforts in communicating science to the wider community and made him a permanent member of staff allowing him to continue with this work and also bring his unique teaching style to teach Mathematics and Physics to our first year Chemists. In the four years he has been at Warwick, Nick has developed an Outreach programme of National standing, is an inspiration to our Undergraduate Chemists and he continues to make significant contributions to University policy. The WATE award is just recognition for Nick’s outstanding contribution to teaching and learning. Well done Nick!
