What is a degree apprenticeship?

Degree apprenticeships combine the best aspects of higher education with vocational training. They offer a debt-free route to academic study whilst earning a salary, and enable apprentices to graduate 'work-ready' with experience of real-life projects.

Our degree apprenticeship programmes at Warwick School of Engineering are designed to enable you to thrive in the workplace.

Your employer

Most of your time will be spent with your employer, allowing you to gain hands-on, vocational training with support from both your line manager and employer mentor.

  • As an apprentice, you are first and foremost an employee of your chosen firm, with much of your learning taking place there.
  • You'll be a full-time salaried employee working as part of a team with real responsibility and learning skills on-the-job.

Your university

The remaining time will be spent as a student at Warwick.

  • Our apprentices spend six or seven week-long blocks each year at the University.
  • You'll attend face-to-face teaching such as lectures, seminars and other learning activities, and immerse yourselves in the university experience.

Blended elements of the course include lectures and online collaborative work, supported by the University's electronic Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). VLE will supplement and further the learning begun during residentials, as well as providing academic support for ongoing projects in the workplace.

Assessment

Assessment methods test the knowledge, skills and behaviours that you gain during your training and include a mix of coursework, presentations, online tests and written examinations.

All assessments will help you to prepare for the End Point Assessment (EPA), the final assessment all apprentices must take to demonstrate occupational competence and successfully complete your apprenticeship.

Support

At Warwick we have developed our apprenticeships with our industry partners, so in addition to academic tutors you will have a dedicated University Apprenticeship Tutor to support you throughout the duration of your apprenticeship programme. You will have regular Progress Review Meetings between you, the University and your line manager (the employer) to ensure you receive continuous support and feedback on you apprenticeship journey. Time on campus will allow you to meet one-to-one with your academic mentors and tutors, and spend time socialising with your peers.
