Risk assessment and management of high risk activities
Designated space owners must record significant hazards on the QuEMIS system in accordance with University policy. More information on QuEMIS can be found here.
In addition, the information recorded on the system must be used to create a laboratory noticeboard which is displayed on each entrance to the space. More information on laboratory noticeboards can be found here.
All staff who lead / define / direct activities must ensure that adequate risk assessments (RA) and safe system of work (SSOW) documents are in place for their activities – the former are to be kept as a physical copy in the health and safety folder for the relevant space.
On completion or review of a risk assessment, for any remaining risk rated as serious or above the Health and Safety Officer must be consulted in relation to the risk assessment, safe systems of work (SSOW) and any potential engineering controls. This must take place as soon as practically possible and before any work commences.
*Any experimental work relating to biological materials may require ethical approval before work can be undertaken.
