Low-Latency Telepresence and Holographic Robotics

What if you could physically interact with a robot thousands of miles away — or even on another planet — as if you were standing right there? Telepresence robotics is turning this science fiction into reality, enabling remote surgery, hazardous site inspection, and assistive care through immersive mixed-reality (XR) interfaces.

Primary supervisor: Dr Zhenhui Yuan - Email: Zhenhui.Yuan@warwick.ac.uk

Project detail:
The success of telepresence depends on low-latency communication and seamless human-robot interaction (HRI). Even small delays can disrupt motion control or user immersion. This PhD will investigate how to design resilient communication frameworks and adaptive control strategies that ensure smooth, responsive operation under varying network conditions.
Potential topics include:
-Modeling how communication delays and task complexity affect operator performance and experience.
-Developing predictive and shared-control algorithms that compensate for latency in real time.
-Creating evaluation benchmarks that unify network, robotics, and HRI perspectives.
This interdisciplinary project sits at the intersection of robotics, networking, and XR technologies, offering opportunities to experiment with cutting-edge teleoperation systems for healthcare, space exploration, and human assistance.
