ABSPIE involved in new WHO guide on medical device policies

The ABSPIE Lab is proud to announce its significant contribution to a crucial new policy document published by the World Health Organization (WHO): Development of medical device policies, 2nd ed. The comprehensive new guide, released on November 12, 2025, provides an updated framework for countries to ensure equitable access to essential medical technologies worldwide.

This major second edition was prepared to align medical device policy development with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and addresses the rapidly evolving landscape of public health and technology.

The updated guidance incorporates new sections critical to modern healthcare delivery, including:

  • Strategies for achieving sustainability in medical technology.
  • Guidance on the integration of digital health technologies.
  • Policy considerations for public health emergencies.
  • Updates to regulatory frameworks, Health Technology Assessment (HTA), and device nomenclature.

ABSPIE co-leaders Dr Davide Piaggio and Prof Leandro Pecchia served as co-authors on the publication, among other international experts. Their involvement, which reinforces ABSPIE’s commitment to translating technical knowledge into impactful global health strategy, was facilitated through the lab’s role as collaborating members of the International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE) Health Technology Assessment Division (HTAD).

"Contributing to this WHO publication was an excellent opportunity to help shape the global conversation on how medical technology is governed and deployed," said Davide Piaggio. "The new edition is essential reading for policymakers aiming to build resilient and sustainable health systems that can meet the challenges of the 21st century."

This work is not an isolated achievement but a continuing trend for ABSPIE. Our ongoing collaborations with the WHO demonstrate the lab’s established commitment to contributing expertise directly to high-level global policy, ensuring our research has maximal real-world impact on healthcare systems worldwide.
