CFD Lab
ES440/911 COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS
Week 11 (YMC & AKP)
INTRODUCTION TO CFD LAB SESSIONS
* The syllabus for the lab sessions
- Session breakdown
- Coursework Assignments & Deadlines
* The programs/languages we shall be using
- Star Design
- Star CCM+
- Fortran 77 (using the G77 compiler)
STAR-DESIGN: A BASIC PACKAGE
Star Design is an introductory version of the Star-CD package produced by CD-Adapco. It is simple to use and has straightforward user interface. The downside is that it is a little slow and is limited in it's applications. This weeks session will consist of:
* Tutorial 1: Pipe-flow
* Tutorial 2: Conjugate Heat Transfer (ProCAD file can be found in the Program Files folder on the PC hard-drive, e.g. C:\Program Files\CD-Adapco\ etc.)
Week 12 (AKP)
STAR-CCM+: A MORE ADVANCED CFD ENVIRONMENT
Star-CCM+ is a simplified version of the full Star-CD program but has many more useful features than the Star Design package. It does have the downfall that geometries cannot be generated within CCM+ but once a CAD surface has been imported, the rest of the simulation can be defined. This weeks session will consist of:
* Introduction to the CCM+ environment
* Opening Star-CCM+ & Starting a Simulation
* The Graphical Users Interface (GUI)
* A Simple Tutorial on Mixed Pipeflow
- Instructions in Star CCM+ tutorials under 'Training Guide', 'Tutorials' and 'Simple Flows'
(you may need to right-click yellow banner at top of help screen to allow content)
- Files can be found on the P:\ under 'Course Files' and 'Es440' etc.
* For those who finish early, there are a number of other tutorials which may be of interest. Choose a tutorial which may be relevant for your coursework assignment.
Week 13 (YMC)
FORTRAN 77 * Introduction
This part will focus on the similarities between Fortran and other languages that students may be familiar with. It will be assumed that all students will have some basic programming knowledge. I.e. how a program follows a sequence of commands.
* How to use the compiler
This focuses on how to create a program, how to compile it and how to run it in Windows XP.
Week 14 (YMC)
FORTRAN 77* Fortran-specific Programming Principles
This looks at loops, if-then decisions, subroutines and I/O procedures.
Week 15 (YMC)
FORTRAN 77* Surgery for help with Coursework
This will allow students to finish off their coursework and get any help with problems they are having.
Week 16 (AKP)
STAR-CCM+: SETTING UP YOUR OWN SIMULATION
Up until this point, only standard Star-CCM+ tutorials have been run through. In order to prepare you for completing the coursework assignment, today's session will show you how to go from having the basic geometry to starting to get some simple results. This weeks session will consist of:
* Import an internal or external geometry depending on your likely choice for the coursework assignment
* How to set-up the solution
* Applying boundary conditions
* Getting your first results
Week 17 (AKP)
STAR-CCM+: GRID MESHING
< More information nearer the time>
Week 18 (AKP)
STAR-CCM+: SOLUTION OPTIONS
< More information nearer the time>
Week 19 (AKP)
STAR-CCM+: TURBULENCE MODELLING
< More information nearer the time>
Week 20 (AKP)
STAR-CCM+: SURGERY
This session will be devoted to providing help to students with coursework specific problems.
