Systems Engineering
HH35 BEng Systems Engineering
HH31 MEng Systems Engineering
Overview
Systems Engineering is an interdisciplinary approach to enabling the realisation of complex systems or analysis of interactions. Many complex engineering products (such as aerospace and automotive) involve a high level of integration and interaction across the mechanical, electronic and software domains. As well as giving you the skills to communicate effectively and pursue a flexible career, a degree in Systems Engineering will allow you to work in an environment where you can exploit synergies between the disciplines, for example in a biomedical context.
A Systems Engineer also needs to understand the broader context of a system including people, processes, and information flow. This will allow you to work on high-level problems facing the world such as climate change, health, food and security. The Systems Thinking approach that will be gained from this course therefore equips engineers to work on an exceptionally broad range of problems from across the engineering sector and from other disciplines.
The Warwick Systems degree reflects our research strengths and industry collaborations in systems modelling and control, information engineering, and biomedical and biological systems.
What you'll study
We offer flexible degree programmes that enable you to experience a range of different engineering disciplines before you decide to specialise. All first year students study a general engineering programme, which is much favoured by industry. In the second year, students continue to study the same core modules as all other students until the end of term one, after which they can specialise, or continue on the general Engineering pathway. You can also switch between the three-year BEng and four-year MEng degrees if academic requirements are met.
Year 1
There are nine core modules in the first year with the option to study a language in addition:
Core modules | Optional extra module |
Dynamics and Thermodynamics | A Modern Foreign Language |
Electrical and Electronic Circuits
Engineering Design | |
Engineering Mathematics
Systems Modelling, Simulation and Computation
Introduction to Engineering Business Management
Materials for Engineering
Introduction to Engineering: Professionalism and Practice
Statics and Structures |
Year 2
You will study:
Core modules | Optional modules |
Dynamics and Fluid Mechanics | Biomedical and Clinical Engineering |
Electromechanical System Design | Computer Architecture and Systems |
Engineering Mathematics and Technical Computing | Planar Structures and Mechanisms |
Technical Operations Management | Starting a Business |
Systems Engineering Principles | Introduction to Secondary Teaching in Physics |
Analogue Electronic Design | A Modern Foreign Language |
Multimedia Technology and Signal Propagation
Technology in International Development
Motor Vehicle Technology
Failure Investigation
Industrial Engineering |
For Intercalated Year degree only
Between years two and three (for BEng/MEng) or between years three and four for MEng:
Optional Core |
Year in Research |
Study Year Abroad |
Work Placement Year |
Year 3
The third year consists of an individual project and six core modules:
Core modules |
Individual Project |
Quality Techniques |
Signal Processing |
Systems Modelling and Control |
Automation and Robotics |
Dynamics of Vibrating Systems |
Biomedical Signals and Systems |
There is also an Exchange Year option (MEng students only) where students replace their third year with study at an approved international institution.
Year 4 (MEng only)
You will study:
Core modules | Optional modules |
Group Project | Computational Fluid Dynamics |
Mathematical and Computer Modelling | Advanced Robotics |
EITHER Biomedical Systems Modelling | Signal and Image Processing |
OR Automobile Systems Dynamics and Control | Advanced Control |
Biomechanics | |
Computational Intelligence in Biomedical Engineering
Affective Computing | |
Power Electronic Convertors and Devices
Control of Electrical Drives
Quality Systems | |
Supply Chain Management
Simulation of Operations
Healthcare Technology Engineering |
The modules listed represent choices available to current students. As the subject of engineering and our school continuously evolve, the range of modules available and the content of any individual module may change in future years. Applicants will be informed as soon as changes are approved. Current students will be consulted prior to the changes being approved.
Intercalated Year Options
Our Placements and Internships Officer will work with you to identify opportunities for year-long and/or summer internships and research opportunities, which often lead to further study and employment for our students. Options to take an intercalated year in industry, research or study abroad are reflected in your degree title, and add a year to your degree duration. MEng students may choose to take their third year at a partner university abroad.
Teaching
You will participate in lectures, seminars, tutorials and practical laboratory sessions. To help you make the transition froom school to university, in your first year you will meet your personal tutor each week in a group usually of five or six students to address academic issues arising from lectures. Your tutor is there to support you throughout your university life and will especially help you to reflect upon your continuing development. Engineers are always involved in interdisciplinary group work and this forms part of our courses from year one.
Assessment
Assessment is through examinations and coursework. Coursework assessment can include laboratory reports, projects, essays and oral presentations.
IET Accreditation
BEng/BSc (Hons)
Accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as an Incorporated Engineer and partly meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.
MEng
Accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.
IMechE Accreditation
BEng (Hons)
Accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) as meeting, in part, the exemplifying academic benchmark requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer. The accredited BEng (Hons) will also automatically meet in full, the exemplifying academic benchmark requirements for registration as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng).
MEng
Accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) as fully meeting the exemplifying academic benchmark requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng).
Career Opportunities
Our graduates have gone on to work for companies such as Atkins, Deloitte, EA Technology, Jaguar Land Rover, MDBA and Transport for London amongst others. Our Placements and Internships Officer will work with you to identify opportunities for year-long and/or summer internships and research opportunities, which often lead to further study and employment for our students.
