BSc Biochemistry
Temitope is from Nigeria and graduated in 2014

Temitope’s background and a bit about why she chose Warwick
“I am Nigerian, the first of four children. I completed my secondary school education in Nigeria before moving to Stonyhurst College, Lancashire for my A levels. I then proceeded to study Biochemistry at Warwick.

I actually discovered my course through UCAS Extra, after getting rejected for medicine. I was very interested in the sciences, and naturally inclined towards Biochemistry as an alternative, with the hope of going to medical school afterwards. I chose Warwick because of its good reputation and world-class research.”

Temitope’s first impressions of Warwick
“I immediately fell in love with the campus at Warwick. There was easy access to everything I needed without having to leave campus. I always wanted to attend a university in a campus setting so Warwick fitted perfectly. Though we were slightly away from the main campus, I really liked the Life Sciences department at Gibbet Hill (not the walk up though). The presence of a learning grid and café at Gibbet Hill made it easy to work from there without having to go to the main campus.”

What did Temitope like most about the University and her degree?
“I really liked the support from the teachers in the School of Life Sciences. The tutor programme was great because I got to interact regularly with my personal tutor/tutor group while learning about new topics through presentations and taught academic tutorials.

I also liked that the structure of the degree allowed for flexibility, especially in the third year when I was able to take modules from the Business School.

I was able to strike a good balance between my academic and extra-curricular activities which made my Warwick experience really enjoyable.”

What does Temitope feel she gained from her degree?
“I gained good analytical and research skills especially through lab work and my final year project. The degree also enabled me develop presentation and communication skills as we did a lot of individual and group presentations. I learnt to work under pressure because the course was really demanding.”

What is Temitope doing now?
“After graduation I was a Business Analyst at Deloitte Consulting. My course adequately prepared me with transferable skills such as analytical, research and presentation skills which have been beneficial to my consulting career. I am currently taking an MBA at Imperial College Business School.

My decision to switch career aspirations from medicine to business actually began in my second year when I started to think about my career options post-graduation. I realized that lab work just wasn't for me and I did not see myself doing it long-term. I have always had a flair for business/economics, even taking Economics at A level. Taking business modules in my final year and finding that it came much more naturally to me further confirmed the decision to switch.

I like my current job because it's never boring. I get to be constantly exposed to a wide variety of industries and experiences, and it is always exciting coming up with solutions tailored to each client.”

What else did Temitope do during her time at Warwick?
“I was the Biochemistry Staff Student Liaison Committee representative for 2 years, and the secretary of the Nigerian Society in my 2nd year. I also participated in and organized events for One World Week and was a Warwick Volunteer.”

What advice would Temitope give to prospective students?
“I think Warwick is such a great place to be. Warwick provides you with a whole lot of opportunities to make you a well-rounded individual and a strong candidate for employment thereafter.”
