For applications to the Mathematics Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) programme, a research proposal is not required. You can use this space to talk about some details of your research interests and experience, which areas of mathematics you are excited about or which potential supervisors you see yourself working with. If this information is already in your personal statement, you can simply upload your personal statement twice. If you do have a research proposal you are welcome to upload this.

Some scholarship competitions require the inclusion of a research proposal, in which case the above guidance might not apply. If you would like to apply for any funding sources other than the CDT Studentships, please check the guidance on the relevant scholarship pages to confirm if a research proposal is required as part of the course application. All PhD students in the Mathematics Institute are expected to join the Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Mathematics. This includes a formal training component that starts in Term 1. Therefore, incoming PhD students are expected to start at the beginning of the academic year (late September or early October). Only in exceptional circumstances can we deviate from that. Due to the nature of a CDT and the taught component, the majority of students undertaking a PhD in Mathematics are full-time students. Occasionally students temporarily or permanently change to part-time study after their first year.

The maximum duration of the course is 4 years for full-time students and 7 years for part-time students.
