Job shadowing
We run a WMS Shadowing Scheme for Professional and Support Services staff and early career researchers, providing an opportunity to shadow a more senior member of staff.
This aims to provide:
- a greater understanding of management structures at WMS
- insights into leadership roles and decision making processes
- the opportunity for colleagues to raise their profile with senior staff
- increased confidence about operating at a more senior level
- enhanced networking opportunities with senior staff

Coaching and mentoring
Mentoring is a widely used development tool that has proved to have a beneficial impact on performance, confidence and career development. At WMS we take part in Warwick's Mentoring Scheme, providing staff with the opportunity to receive focused developmental support outside of their normal line management relationship. Our mentors are all University colleagues who mentor alongside their normal role. The Mentoring Scheme is available to all colleagues as both mentor and mentee.
For academic members of staff we have our own WMS mentoring scheme.
Observing a Senior Management Group meeting
In order to develop a better understanding of how a university department is run, we offer our staff the opportunity to observe a meeting of our Senior Management Group. This opportunity is advertised in our internal newsletter, generally several times per year.
Careers advice and planning
The University has put together guidance on writing a CV, interview skills and progressing your career at Warwick. Staff at WMS have access to the internal Warwick vacancy list, and secondment opportunities are promoted in the weekly newsletter.
Secondments
As part of our approach to managing talent and succession planning, secondment opportunities are encouraged. The University recognises secondment opportunities as:
- developmental for the individual
- an additional means of advancing career paths
- adding to the skills base of the organisation
- an opportunity to build or develop relationships with other organisations or internal departments
Take a look at the University's Secondment Policy. (staff only)
Redeployment
The University values and recognises the contribution made by its employees and is committed, where possible, to maintaining employment. Suitable alternative employment is considered only where it is not possible for the employee to continue in their current role, either through the post becoming redundant, through medical capability or some other substantial reason.
