International Women’s Day Seminar
‘Women in Science, Choose to Challenge’ with Dr Meera Unnikrishnan
The theme of this year’s International Women's Day (IWD) campaign is ‘choose to challenge’. This seminar is just one of many events taking place across the country to celebrate women’s achievements, raise awareness of gender bias and taking action for equality.
Seminar synopsis
In this seminar we will hear from Dr Meera Unnikrishnan, Associate Professor of molecular bacteriology from the Division of Biomedical Science. She and her colleagues will soon be moving into the brand new state of the art Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research Building (IBRB) on campus to look at bacterial infections to gain an understanding of how bacteria invade and survive within the human host.
During this talk we will learn about how Meera has developed a successful career in science overcoming the challenges she has had to contend with along the way. As outreach lead for WMS Meera will also talk about the importance of raising awareness of science as a viable career for girls, how her and colleagues get young people excited about science and challenge gender bias through the work they do with schools and in the community.
