Aims

  • To ensure opportunities for academic career training and development are available to all staff at all stages of their career
  • To identify and address barriers to the uptake of academic career training and development opportunities
  • To increase the visibility of academic career resources and opportunities
  • To demonstrate collegiality, integrity, fairness and respect within an environment that is both supportive and challenging

Activities/ Achievements

  • Highly Commended for the Excellence in Gender Equality Team Award 2022.
  • Ongoing tracking of data from Athena Swan surveys, HR teams and other sources to support early identification of success or concerns.
  • Hosting of targeted workshops to support career development (e.g. promotions, barriers to an academic career, getting started with professional registration with Advance HEE, time to focus on me).
  • Support of Beacon Internships that up-skill researchers from under-represented communities.
  • Ongoing promotion and signposting to resources (e.g. mentoring, shadowing, career support networks, training) from WMS newsletters and across Research Culture webpages, and through partner groups.
  • Development of information about new starters in newsletters and on Athena SWAN webpages to showcase our diverse community.

Future Plans

  • To continue to explore the challenges of fixed-term contracts.
  • Promote resources to support individuals at all stages of their career.
  • To align with central University induction and exit processes
