The winner of this year's Block 4 art competition is Ruthie Brooks for her entry 'Treat One, Treat All' - a reflection on the long-term impact of healthcare on the individual. This annual MBChB Musculoskeletal Art Competition is run in honour of 4-year-old Brian. In 2018, Brian was killed in a car accident following significant musculoskeletal trauma. He was a blossoming artist who loved to paint, model and sketch animals. When Brian died, his mother (an orthopaedic surgeon) started a small fund in his name to encourage medical students to engage in artistic endeavours, and to never forget the art that is found in the practice of medicine. This year, there were 13 original submissions from our Year 1 MBChB students including: paintings, digital art, needlepoint, and clothing, with three winners and two honourable mentions as listed below;
  • 1st - Ruthie Brooks
  • 2nd - Peter Whitehead
  • 3rd - Harriet Gosztonyi
  • Honourable mentions to Linta Nasim and Kaja Vermazen

Dr Erin Fillmore commented "I want to thank each and every student for sharing their incredible work and talent, allowing us to see the musculoskeletal system through their eyes! We had 62 individuals from across the world judge the submissions, all of who have commented on how impressed they were with the submitted works. Thank you to each participant for helping to keep Brian's name alive, and shining a beautiful light on the importance of art in medicine"

Well done to everyone who submitted an entry - copies of all submitted works will soon be proudly displayed in MTC Reception along the stairway so please do make the effort to admire the artwork next time you are passing.
