Impact

ISOBAR aims to deliver numerous impacts including a decrease in stigma, improvements in general health, and informing local, regional and national policies.

First, by developing and evaluating the ISOBAR intervention to promote, detect and prevent mental and nutritional disorders in schools and by providing sustainable pathways to care and support, ISOBAR can decrease stigma in the long term by increasing literacy and awareness in youth, so they are more open to, willing and knowledgeable about their options to seek and receive care.

Second, by implementing a whole-school intervention for mental and nutritional disorders, which is accessible to all students, regardless of their gender, race or socioeconomic status, ISOBAR can reduce health inequities associated with some school-based interventions, where only one gender may be the primary target group. In the long term, these two areas have the potential to improve the general health, well-being and quality of adolescents, which would align them with a more positive mental and physical trajectory in their life course.

Third, by implementing and evaluating the proposed intervention in two geographically and culturally distinct LMICs, we will establish the contextual effect of the intervention and provide further evidence and recommendations to inform, local, regional and national policies. Similarly, by conducting research in different countries we will build unique networks to share knowledge and strategy developments, which inform key actors in the school, health and policy domains on the effective adaptations of the ISOBAR programme.

Finally, the consolidation of these efforts builds capacity for local implementation research, by engaging, training, and mentoring stakeholders regarding the importance, processes and management of interventions to address mental and nutritional disorders in schools. Together, these outcomes are expected to aid in advancing the integration and scale-up interventions in more schools, which results in a wider reach of adolescent prevention interventions.
