Advancing diabetes care: Evidence into practice

This online module is designed to give healthcare professionals involved in the care of diabetes mellitus the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to provide high-quality care, informed by current clinical evidence.

The course will encourage students to:

• Analyse and critically appraise clinical evidence in relation to the care of people at risk of developing type 2 diabetes and those with type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
• Critically analyse the specific needs of people from black and minority ethnic populations who are at higher risk of developing diabetes mellitus.
• Analyse and evaluate the economic and social costs related to diabetes mellitus and its associated complications.
• Identify and articulate barriers and levers in the implementation and management of change to the delivery of holistic, effective and integrated diabetes care with the person with diabetes respected as an individual and central to his or her own health care.
• Reflect on personal learning styles and needs to enhance and develop the practice skills, and apply them in order to develop a multi-disciplinary team approach to the management of people with diabetes.
• Critically assess the teaching programmes and methods which may be used when educating people with diabetes and their carers about the condition.

Diabetes management in practice (clinical observation)

This module aims to expose students to management of diabetes in a range of areas within the UK health service and requires them to critically reflect upon diabetes management and the application of theory to practice.

The course will encourage students to:

• Identify individual learning objectives for clinical observations and critically evaluate own personal learning outcomes.
• Critically analyse current research evidence and provide evidence based appraisal of observed practice.
• Critically reflect on personal learning and the need to develop practice skills, and show a critical awareness of their application to the clinical environment.
• Citically analyse and discuss how theoretical concepts are adapted and applied to clinical practice in the management of people living with diabetes.
• Justify anticipated clinical outcomes in relation to the clinical management plan for a patient with diabetes and other co- morbidities.
• Evaluate the key theoretical concepts related to the use of current technology in the administration of insulin.

 Preventing diabetes complications: An evidence based approach

This module aims to help health professionals gain an in-depth understanding regarding the identification and detection of micro and macrovascular diabetes related complications. Students will learn to examine and discuss cost effective health service provision for diabetes management to reduce diabetes related complications and their associated costs.

The course will encourage students to:

• Critically analyse current research evidence and guidance, in order to enhance clinical practice.
• Critically analyse and evaluate the economic and social costs related to diabetes and related complications.
• Critically analyse and evaluate outcomes for the prevention, detection and treatment of diabetes related complications.
• Examine, evaluate and change practice in diabetes care and management.
• Develop critical awareness of the physiological and psychological impact of diabetes and its related complications.
• Evaluate and reflect on the various hypotheses of pathogenesis of macro- and micro-vascular diabetic complications.
• Reflect on personal learning styles and needs to enhance and develop the practice skills, and apply them in order to develop a multi-disciplinary team approach to the management of people with diabetes.
