• The pathophysiology of the acute burn wound and the systemic response to burn injury
• The principles of fluid resuscitation
• The pathophysiology of inhalation injury:
  • Airway management
  • Adjuncts
• The management plan for patients with acute burn injuries including emergency treatment
• The pathophysiology of cutaneous acute and chronic wounds
• The management plan for patients with acute and chronic cutaneous wounds

By the end of the module, you will be able to:

• Critically evaluate the functional anatomy and altered pathophysiology of skin, and a range of related body systems, relevant to acute and chronic wounds, including burn injuries
• Adapt a standard approach to performing a full systems clinical examination, providing reasoned rationale for the adaptive approach
• Provide a detailed plan of justified investigations and a treatment plan based on a critical appraisal of best evidence, appropriate to burn injuries and wounds, and fulfil professional requirements related to record keeping and documentation
• Develop critical appraisal skills in assimilating and synthesising patient variables in order to support autonomous practice, improve patient experience and outcomes with burn injuries and problematic wound healing
• Present a case study assignment focussing on either an acute burn injury or problematic wound management incorporating critical appraisal of relevant literature
