Research Profile

Sam’s research interests are in contraception and reproductive health care.  He was awarded first prize in the RCGP/Astra Research Award, 1980.  He was awarded a grant in 1992 from North West Thames Regional Health Authority for a survey of women’s reproductive health; this survey formed part of his MD.  He has had seven oral and nine poster presentations accepted at national and international congresses.  He has written over 60 peer-reviewed papers, a book and thirteen chapters in books on contraception and reproductive health care. 

Background
Sam qualified at the London Hospital Medical College. Following GP vocational training in Surrey, he was Research Assistant to Professor John Guillebaud at the Margaret Pyke Centre. He was then a principal in general practice in Bedfordshire for 17 years. All data for his doctorate were collected during his time in general practice. After this, he was Medical Director of EPIC which held the General Practice Research Database. He moved to Warwickshire to take up the post of Clinical Director of BPAS. He now works in the Department of Sexual Health, Worcestershire PCT. Sam has been preparing expert reports for the assistance of the civil courts since 1995. He completed an LLM in Medical Law at the University of Northumbria in 2009.  He is a past Vice President of the Faculty of Sexual & Reproductive Healthcare and past President of the Royal Society of Medicine Sexuality & Sexual Health Section.

Sam is Module Leader of Contraception and Reproductive Health in the Community. He is a supervisor of Dissertations/Professional Projects for the MSc in Sexual & Reproductive Health Care.
