Interview panels

We aim to have a student interviewer on all panels for MBChB teaching staff. Interested students need to complete 2 online training modules.

Interested? Contact Kate Owen.

Student and Staff Liaison Committee (SSLC)

The Student and Staff Liason Committee (SSLC) meets once a month, currently via Teams, with each year having two representatives on the committee. There are a variety of staff members present, including heads of year groups, senior WMS staff, assessment team representatives, admin leads for each year, and more.

Students are encouraged to let their year representatives know of any issues or points they would like raised at the meeting in advance, so that they can be discussed with the relevant people at the SSLC meeting.

It aims to try to resolve these and ultimately improve the student experience at WMS.

Student Societies and Clubs

Whether it's representing your sports team in the annual Medical Schools competition (NAMS), helping organise events with Teddy Bear Hospital, taking part in simulated pre-hospital emergencies with PHEMTEC, or getting involved in writing and performing the Medics' Revue Show, there are a huge variety of Medic-run Societies and Clubs.

Mystery Shoppers

Student feedback on lectures and teaching is important. Our student-designed "Mystery Shopper" programme gives training on how to provide expert feedback, in order to allow students to effectively assess the quality of their teaching and give useful suggestions to improve it.

This is something we've rolled out across every year group, which allows consistent student input.

Curriculum away days

We have curriculum away days twice a year and have an open invitation for students to attend. Student contributions have made changes to policy and course content.

Students who have attended have commented:

“The away day was a very interesting opportunity to experience the hard work which the faculty have gone to, to adapt the lecture-based phase 1 into a Covid-19 friendly course."

"Our faculty are working hard to make our content interactive and enjoyable in these difficult times, and I believe the incoming 2020 phase 1 are going to be equipped with some great resources to learn complex material”.

“Having the full range of staff present so feedback could go across disciplines gave a lovely whole team feel. I think the students were appreciated and the remarks we fed back about our experience of each thing were well received, it will be exciting to see if/how they affect things upcoming. I a) wish more students took part in these as they are good opportunities and generally enjoyable and b) wish we were allowed along to more!"

Student Working Groups

Various Student Working Groups have been set up to tackle different issues that need student input; whether they are internal issues, or national issues affecting WMS.

The most recently-created group is our Attainment Gap Group, aimed at addressing the difference in educational outcomes between BAME and white medical students.

The group features student representatives from every year group, clinical and academic staff representatives, and admin staff.

The group is responsible for collecting data on the attainment gap in WMS medical students, analysing possible causes, and identifying measures that need to be implemented with the aim of closing the attainment gap.
