Undergraduate Research Support Scheme questions
We asked Dr Jon Duffy (Departmental Careers Contact) 3 quick questions about the University Undergraduate Research Support SchemeLink opens in a new window (URSS).
What skills do students gain through being involved?
The main objective of the scheme is to give students experience in working on a real piece of research, typically within a research group. We find that the students develop a wide variety of skills alongside this experience, such as using their initiative and communication skills.
How do students decide what to research?
Our students often have a good idea which particular areas of physics they are most interested in. They'll then contact a member of staffLink opens in a new window working in that field to ask about running a summer project.
What have you most enjoyed about working with students on projects in this way?
I have to say I really enjoy working with students on summer projects. All the students I've supervised or helped have been excellent, and have really engaged with their projects. I find it rewarding, and I think the students do too.
