Calculators
Calculators permitted in A-level physics examinations will be allowed in PX*** coded examinations. Calculators with computer algebra systems are not permitted in examinations (see below for complete guidance). If you normally use a calculator which would be in breach of these rules then you must obtain one that will satisfy them. It is in your own interests to practice with the calculator you will use in examinations prior to your first examination!
The Mathematics Department says: the use of any mathematical software and sophisticated calculators is permitted, indeed encouraged where appropriate, in Mathematics lectures, coursework and homework, even if for credit. HOWEVER, calculators are NOT permitted in any MA*** coded examination.
Calculator Regulations
Calculators must be:
- of a size suitable for use on the desk;
- either battery or solar powered;
- free of lids, cases and covers which have printed instructions or formulae.
Calculators must not:
- be designed or adapted to offer any of these facilities:
- language translators;
- symbolic algebra manipulation;
- symbolic differentiation or integration;
- communication with other machines or the internet;
- be borrowed from another candidate during an examination for any reason;
- have retrievable information stored in them. This includes:
- databanks;
- dictionaries;
- mathematical formulae;
- text.
The candidate is responsible for the following:
- the calculator’s power supply;
- the calculator’s working condition;
- clearing anything stored in the calculator.
