Trustworthy autonomous systems programme – responsibility

Full text: The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the Economic and Social Research Council invite applications for their trustworthy autonomous systems programme. This supports novel and creative multidisciplinary research on responsibility for autonomous systems. This call aims to support creative, multi- and interdisciplinary research which focuses on the challenging questions of how autonomous systems can be responsibly designed and developed to ensure that:▪they are ethical and legally operational;▪responsibility for their decisions, failures, and overall impact can be traced.Proposed projects should integrate researchers from different disciplines, particularly from social sciences, arts and humanities.Applicants based in UK HEIs, public sector research establishments, research council institutes and UKRI-approved independent research organisations and NHS bodies with research capacity may apply. PIs must be employed at the submitting research organisation at lecturer level or above, hold a fixed-term contract that extends beyond the duration of the proposed project, hold an EPSRC, Royal Society or Royal Academy of Engineering fellowship aimed at later career stages or hold fellowships under other schemes.The total budget is worth up to £3 million, to support four grants over 30 months. Grants are expected to be in the range of £400,000 and £700,000.
