Skin cancer detection using THz waves on BBC 1 West Midlands news
Transcript from the news item: Scientists at the University of Warwick have created a robot arm to detect skin cancer using Terahertz waves. The waves, which are a lower frequency than X-rays, are being used to scan the water levels in skin cancer cells. Researchers hope that in the future, it will help surgeons remove as little healthy skin as possible during surgery. In the presence of skin cancer the skin will be different, it will have a different water concentration, and we can detect that prior to surgery, so we can plan the surgery better and excise the whole skin cancer tumour in one go. This will speed up the removal of cancer.
