Short Biography
I obtained my B.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of Hull in 1982, an M.Sc. in 1990 from the State University of New York at Binghamton under Prof. Cliff Myers and my PhD in Materials in 1995 from the School of Engineering at the University of Wales, Cardiff under Prof. Richard J. D. Tilley FRSC. I joined the Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory at the University of Oxford in 1995 as a PDRA, initially working with Prof. Malcolm L. H. Green FRS, and during this time discovered 2 x 2 and 3 x 3 atomic layer KI "Feynman Crystals" (aka 'Extreme Nanowires') and 1D polyhedral chains of lanthanide, barium, cobalt and other halides in single walled nanotubes. In 1996 my PDRA was extended to the Department of Materials initiating a collaboration with Prof. Reshef Tenne. In 2000 I was awarded a Royal Society University Research Fellowship and 2003 a Research Fellowship at Wolfson College. In 2004 I received the FEI European Microscopy Award at the ICEM in Antwerp. In January 2006 I was appointed to a Senior Lectureship in the ATI, Surrey and in 2007 to a Readership in the School of Engineering and Materials Science at Queen Mary University of London before moving in 2008 to the School of Physics in the University of Warwick to a post funded by the Warwick Centre for Analytical Science (WCAS), supported by the EPSRC. In 2018, I was awarded an EPSRC Established Career Fellowship (2018-2023) which helped extend and further develop collaborations in particular with Prof. Slawomire Kret at the PAN in Warsaw and Prof. Eric Faulques at CNRS Lille.

Research Interests I am a materials scientist with interests in solid state physics and materials chemistry, carbon and non-carbon based fullerene-like materials, and advanced electron microscopy imaging techniques. My research portfolio may be summarised as follows:

(i) Synthesis, characterisation and applications of atomically constrained crystals formed within carbon nanotubes including crystals based on metals, metal halides, chalcogenides, discrete molecules and, most recently, halide perovskites (or 'picoperovskites'). These materials form fascinating new crystal structures with modified crystal chemistries, electronic and mechanical properties. Recently this work has been extended to include polyoxometalates which we have imaged both within nanotubes and on graphene derivatives.

(ii) Synthesis and application of 'smart' nanocomposites with two or more useful physical properties based on layered chalcogenides and composites with complex oxides and other structures with a particular emphasis on lithium ion storage.

(iii) Direct imaging of the defects and lattice distortions present in technologically relevant complex oxides including nanoparticulate oxides but also carbon-based porous materials (e.g. Metal-Organic Framework materials or MOFs). This will be achieved by advanced HRTEM and STEM imaging methods enabling aberration-free sub-Angstrom imaging through both indirect and direct Cs correction.

Cristina Giusca and Vlad Stolojan within the University of Surrey; Dr. Emmanuel Flahaut, at CNRS Toulouse and Prof. Marc Monthioux at CNRS CEMES Tolouse; Drs. Kazu Suenaga and Zheng Liu at the National Institute for Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, Japan; Prof. Reshef Tenne at the Weizmann Institute of Science and with Dr Richard Beanland, Dr Neil Wilson, Steve York, Ana Sanchez-Fuentes and other members of the Warwick Physics Microscopy Group and also Corinne Smith and others at the Biological Sciences microscopy group at Warwick. My colleague Dr. David Quigley and I, together with Dr. Andrew Morris in Cambridge, were just awarded a new EPSRC grant (i.e. 'New modeling capability for nano-confined phase change materials') in order to investigate the crystallographic and physical properties changes of Extreme Nanowires and nano-scale phase change materials. I also collaborate with Prof. David C. Smith of Southampton University on the Raman Spectroscopy of these fillings in carbon nanotubes and through EAgLE with Prof. Sławomir (Slawek) Kret and Prof. Piotr Dłużewski of the Laboratory of X-ray and Electron Microscopy Research at the Institute of Physics, Warsaw.
