Information regarding individual APTS weeks, 2008-2009

Below you can find information regarding local arrangements for each APTS week, including contact details, provisional timetables and travel advice. You will be notified by email when important new information appears here relating to an APTS week for which you are registered.

Please note: if you have a query regarding any local arrangements for a given week, you should contact the local organisers (whose details will be listed below nearer the time of the respective APTS week), and not APTS itself.



Week 4: University of Glasgow (31st August 2009 - 4th September 2009)

  • Local organisers: Adrian Bowman - a dot bowman at stats dot gla dot ac dot uk
  • Modules: Spatial and Longitudinal Data Analysis (P Diggle); Nonparametric Smoothing (A Delaigle)
  • Travel: Students are expected to travel to Glasgow on Sunday 30th August, ready for lectures to begin first thing Monday morning. The APTS week will finish at lunchtime on Friday, as usual. Information on how to get to Glasgow University can be found here.
  • Accommodation: Accommodation is at Queen Margaret Residences, Bellshaugh Court, Kirklee, Glasgow G12 0PR (please find the Map of the University Residences here and a Campus Map here). Accommodation is in single, en suite rooms, organised in flats of five bedrooms, each with shared kitchen facilities. All linen and towels are provided. There is also off-street parking. Internet access is available free of charge in each bedroom, however you will need to provide you own ethernet cable. Accommodation has been booked for the nights of Sunday 30th August; Thursday 3rd September (departing Friday 4th September). For check-in on Sunday 30th August, the reception is open until 9pm. If you will be arriving after that time, please contact Beverley Dixon (beverley at stats dot gla dot ac dot uk) in order that keys can be made available by other means.
  • Registration: Registration for the APTS week will take place between 5pm and 8pm on Sunday 30th August at Queen Margaret Residences. Registration will also be possible between 8.30am and 9am on 31st August, at the Department of Statistics in the University of Glasgow. However, in order to save time, students are requested to make use of the registration at Queen Margaret Residences if at all possible. You will receive your badge from the registration desk. Please wear your badge at all times. This will help with security and also help you identify fellow participants.
  • Ceilidh: On the Thursday evening we shall be holding an Ceilidh.
  • Special requirements: Please complete this form by Monday 10th August 2009 to inform us of any dietary or other special requirements.

    Week 3: University of Bath (29th June 2009 - 3rd July 2009)

    • Modules: Applied Stochastic Processes (S B Connor and W S Kendall); Computer Intensive Statistics (B D Ripley)
    • Travel: Information on how to get to the University of Bath can be found here. Bath Spa rail station is 15 minutes away from the campus; you can either catch a taxi outside the station –please make sure to ask to be taken to the University of Bath, NOT Bath Spa University- or take the “bright orange bus” from the bus station (click here for the location of the bus station relative to the rail station). Orange buses (number 18/418) depart every 15 minutes in holiday time and are very reliable. You can find maps of the campus and the City of Bath here. If you plan on coming by car, please email c dot negre at bath dot ac dot uk with your arrival and departure dates by Tuesday 2nd June 2009, so that a permit can be arranged. Please note that the car parking permit for the duration of the workshop costs £3.50.
    • Accommodation: All students requiring accommodation will be housed on campus, in the Eastwood Residence. Accommodation in standard rooms has been booked for the nights of Monday 29th June – Thursday 2nd July (departing Friday 3rd). Linen is provided and bathroom and kitchen facilities are shared. Your keys can be collected from the Accommodation Services Centre which is located on the Ground Floor of the Woodland Court accommodation complex (find Woodland Court here) between 14:00 and 22:00 on Monday 29th June.
    • Registration and lectures: All lectures and computer sessions will take place in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering (building 2E on the campus map). Registration will be open between 11:15am and 12:30pm on Monday 29th June, outside lecture room 2E3.1. Please visit the Registration Desk during this period to register and receive your welcome pack. Registration will be followed by a buffet lunch from 12:45 in room 1W3.15 in the Department of Mathematical Sciences. You will not be able to check into your accommodation before 14.00, but you will be able to leave your luggage in a secure room adjacent to the registration area.
    • Academy dinner and special requirements: On the Tuesday evening we shall be holding an 'Academy Dinner'. Please complete this form by Tuesday 2nd June 2009 to verify your attendance to the Academy Dinner and to infrom us of any special dietary requirements.

      Week 2: University of Southampton (1st April 2009 - 5th April 2009)

      • Local organisers: apts at soton dot ac dot uk
      • Modules: Statistical Modelling (A. C. Davison and J. J. Forster); Statistical Asymptotics (G. A. Young)
      • Travel: Information on how to get to the University of Southampton can be found here. If you are travelling by train, from London or the North, the most convenient station is Southampton Airport Parkway. Registration and all APTS lectures and workshops will take place in the School of Social Sciences Building (Murray Building), situated on the main (Highfield) campus. For further information and for a Highfield campus map click here: the School of Social Sciences Building is number 58. If you are arriving by car, please inform the local organisers as soon as possible as car parking spaces are limited.
      • Accommodation: All students requiring accommodation will be housed in the Glen Eyre Complex, about 10 minutes walk from the Murray Building. Accommodation with en-suite facilities has been booked for the nights of Wednesday 1st April – Saturday 4th April and your keys may be collected at Registration on Wednesday 1st April. All linen is provided (this includes hand towels, towels, duvets and two pillows) and kitchen facilities are shared. Meals will be provided in the Chambers Restaurant. All rooms have internet connections (http://www.southampton.ac.uk/isolutions/computing/net/halls/index.html) although you will need to provide your own ethernet cable. Alternatively, PCs with free internet and email access are available in the Murray Building Foyer.
      • Registration: Registration will be open between 11.15am and 13.45pm on Wednesday 1st April, in the Murray Building, where a buffet lunch will be available from 12.45. Please visit the Registration Desk during this period to receive your welcome pack and pick up your keys to your accommodation. You will not be able to check into your accommodation until 15.00, but you will be able to leave baggage in a secure room in the Murray Building.
      • Academy dinner and special requirements: On the Saturday evening we shall be holding an 'Academy Dinner'. Please complete this form by Friday 13th March 2009 to verify your attendance to the Academy Dinner and to infrom us on any special dietary requirements.

        Week 1: University of Warwick (8th December 2008 - 12th December 2008)

        • Modules: Statistical Computing (S.N. Wood); Statistical Inference (D.R. Cox and D.Firth)
        • Travel: Information on how to get to the University of Warwick can be found here. In particular, if you are arriving by rail, see the information here. Buses from Coventry station to campus take approximately 20-25 minutes. If you are arriving by car, please use Car Park 15: you can then obtain a code from Rootes Reception (when checking in to your accommodation) which will allow you to exit the car park without paying.
        • Accommodation: All students requiring accommodation will be housed in Rootes halls, about 3 minutes walk from the centre of campus. Accommodation has been booked for the nights of Monday 8th - Thursday 11th December. Linen is provided and bathroom and kitchen facilities are shared. Meals will be provided in Rootes Restaurant. All rooms have internet connections (although you will need to provide your own ethernet cables). Alternatively, PCs with free internet and email access are available in Rootes Reception (0700-2300 Mon-Sat).
          All APTS lectures and classes will take place in the Mathematics and Statistics building, situated on main campus. Click here for a map of Warwick campus: Rootes accommodation is marked by 46, and the Mathematics and Statistics building is number 35.         • Registration: Registration will be open between 1115 and 1245 on Monday 8th December, in the Mathematics and Statistics building. Please visit the registration desk during this period to receive your welcome pack. You will not be able to check into your accommodation until 1500, but you may leave baggage at Rootes Reception (building 49 on the above map) before this if you wish.
        • Academy dinner: On the Thursday evening we shall be holding an 'Academy dinner'. Please use this form to select your menu for the evening, by Friday 21st November.
