Preparatory Work - Refreshening your Mathematics skills
Preparatory work
Refresh your maths skills
Most new students will not have done any mathematics since they sat their exams in Summer. Skills get rusty if we aren't using them!
To make sure that you have the best possible start on your degree programme we strongly encourage you to do some preparatory work to easy yourself back into doing some maths and remembering some key methods from your studies.
As soon as you have enrolled, and registered for your IT account, you can complete our Mathematics Refresher course (available early September).
For those studying the MORSE or Data Science degree programmes
Our current students have suggested some optional resources that may help you have a smoother start on your programmes.
For MORSE students. If you did you study economics before university, then current students have recommended EconplusDal YouTube channel. This channel contains multiple short videos covering Microeconomics and Macroeconomics. Our students stated that they found the information useful background for Year 1 economics.
For Data Science students. If you did not study programming or computer science before university then MEI offer 6 lessons that provide an Introduction to Data Science including programming.
We do not expect you to complete wider this reading before you start your course. All the reading lists you need for your course are embedded into your course materials.
However, many new students find the study level at university different from the mathematics completed at high school. The following texts may help understand the the difference:
Very optionally - Even more Mathematics. If you wish to continue practicing your advanced mathematical problem solving, the following pages are recommended.
If you are one of the offer holders who did not take Further Maths A-level (or only completed some of it), we recommend you consider resources that address this material. Please see the information for those taking Single Mathematics on the Offer Information pageLink opens in a new window.
