Warwick Centre for Doctoral Training in Mathematics and Statistics

The Warwick Centre of Doctoral Training (CDT) in Mathematics and Statistics is a new collaboration between the Mathematics Institute and the Department of Statistics starting in 2019. General information about this CDT can be found here. The taught component of the Statistics-focused training programme is made of three code modules:

ST910: An invitation to graduate probability
ST911: Fundamentals of modern statistical inference
ST912: Statistical frontiers

In addition to these core modules, students can take any of the existing level 4 or level 9 modules offered by the Department of Statistics from our existing Masters programmes. The Institute of Mathematics also makes available some of their modules. Additional opportunities offered to first-year students by this CDT include:

An intensive master class on aspects of machine learning in the third term of the first year
Projects will give students the chance to experiment with a topic of their choice
During term breaks, students will participate in the Academy for PhD Training in Statistics (APTS) or the Taught Course Centre (TCC)

Following the taught component, at the end of the first year, students will have the opportunity to choose a supervisor with whom they will define the topic of their studies. Indeed, as opposed to most CDTs, the Warwick CDT in Mathematics and Statistics is not limited to a single subject so that any generally suitable topic in pure statistics (including probability) or at the intersection between statistics and cognate disciplines will be considered.

Internship Scheme

The Warwick Statistics Internship Scheme is an 8 week programme taking place in July and August. Successful applicants will be allocated a research project and supervisor, and have the opportunity to work on cutting edge research in statistics, probability, or mathematical finance. You will have the chance to collaborate with PhD students and staff in the department, be part of a global cohort of fellow interns, and gain first hand experience of what a PhD in the department might entail.

Research seminars and development

There are regular seminars and reading groups to engage in Workshops discussing cutting edge research topics take place throughout the year. Seminars are open to everybody, and PhD students are particularly encouraged to take part.

The YRM (Young Researchers Meeting) takes place weekly during term time and gives students the opportunity to practice their presentations, talking about their work in a friendly environment.

Special departmental initiatives promote research and interaction in broad major areas and provide the Department's PhD students with a wide variety of academic resources, including sustained programmes of research seminars and international workshops.

Affiliated Centres for Doctoral Training

Mathematics for Real-World Systems (MathsSys) is a doctoral training centre coordinated by three interdisciplinary research centres. The PhD students will be supervised by academics from a range of departments including Statistics, Mathematics, Physics, Systems Biology and Computer Science. The Molecular Analytical Science (MAS) will train a new generation of scientists in exploiting synergies between different experimental methods and in combining data collection with experimental design, statistical analysis, modelling and simulation.
The Modelling of Heterogeneous Systems (HetSys) is is a new centre for doctoral training recruiting students from across the physical sciences.
