How to Apply

We are recruiting ambitious, curious and passionate students into our exciting PhD, EngD, CDT and MSc by Research vacancies.

We are looking for problem solvers to find solutions to issues which will change the future of industry. If you would like to join us, please follow the steps below – we look forward to hearing from you.

Research Degree scholarships

Step 2

If you haven’t done so already, speak with one of our Research Degree supervisors or research groups to discuss your idea for a research project and explore funding opportunities. Include your CV, a short explanation covering why you want to work in this area, highlight what interests you about WMG and summarise why you want to work with that supervisor.

Step 3

Complete our enquiry form. We use this form to check if you are eligible and suitable for the programme or project you are interested in. You may therefore be asked to submit a formal application or provide additional supporting documents after we have reviewed your details. If successful, you will be invited for an interview.

Entry requirements

  • In order to meet our academic entry requirements, you should have obtained a UK First or Upper Second Class Honours Degree (2:1) or equivalent. You can check international degree equivalencies on our overseas qualifications pagesLink opens in a new window.
  • Non-UK applicants may be required to satisfy the University requirements for English language ability, as described hereLink opens in a new window (WMG is Band A)
  • Non-native speakers of English will need to provide a suitable English qualification.
  • Please see individual project adverts via our vacancies page for any further requirements.

When to apply

  • We encourage proactive approaches from you to supervisors. There is no time too early.
  • If you have not yet graduated, you may apply during your final year of undergraduate studies. In this case, if your application is successful, we will make a conditional offer and you can provide final transcripts once you have completed your studies.
  • Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Typical start dates are October, February and June. Opportunities will be removed once filled.

Important additional information

  • Please only apply for ONE of our Research Degree pathways; do not submit multiple applications. If you need advice on selecting the most appropriate pathway for you, or subsequently think you would prefer to switch to another pathway, please contact us to discuss. For students requiring a visa, any pathway changes need to be made before you are issued with a CAS.
  • When selecting the ‘University department’, choose WMG.
  • Ensure the supervisor you are selecting is from WMG.

Current Vacancies

Funding

We have a number of research projects available which are fully or partially funded. The majority of these are for UK/EU applicants, though occasionally we advertise positions that are also open to overseas applicants. Please refer to specific project descriptions on each funded project for details.

  • If you are able to self-fund your studies, then we can consider self-proposed research projects if they align with WMG research areas.

Currently UK Resident

Support may be available from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). To qualify, you’ll need a minimum 2:1 Honours degree, to have indefinite leave to remain in the UK, and have been a UK resident for 3 years prior to the project start date - apart from occasional or temporary absences. Additional details of these criteria are available on the EPSRC websiteLink opens in a new window. This will usually fund registration fees and give a stipend for the year.

Non-UK Resident
