WMG STRIKES NEW SOFTWARE DEAL

A WMG PRESS RELEASE
PR 11/08
23 September 2008

WMG STRIKES NEW SOFTWARE DEAL

WMG, the international research and education group at the University of Warwick, will today agree a multi-million pound deal with a leading global industrial software provider.

The deal, with USA-based PTC, will mean WMG's students and academics can access top software used in engineering and technology companies around the world. It will also establish a new ‘PTC Academy’ at WMG.

The PTC package of process management software will be used in WMG's new Digital Lab together with a range of high-tech software and hardware being installed in the building. And the company will fund research into how visualisation can enhance product development

Director of WMG Professor Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya said: "Our new focus on digital technology means we need the best equipment in the world in the Lab. This new agreement with PTC will give our students unrivalled access to state-of-the-art technology so that they will be among the best in their field when they enter the job market.”

WMG academics will conduct collaborative R&D using the equipment and small businesses in the West Midlands will also benefit through free training and technology guidance.

The £13 million Digital Lab was officially opened in July by Prime Minister Gordon Brown using ‘virtual scissors’ to cut a ribbon in cyberspace created by WMG’s research teams. The high-tech and environmentally-friendly building will house advanced digital research and education projects including visualisation, e-security, applied neuroimaging and product lifecycle management.

PTC Executive Vice President Barry  F Cohen said: "WMG has been a strategic partner of PTC for over 10 years, this new agreement elevates our relationship. The results of which will establish a new benchmark in design collaboration throughout the world."
