Title: "Assessing Sustainability More Effectively"

Stuart Coles is an Associate Professor of Sustainable Materials and Manufacturing at WMG and has been focusing on incorporating bio-based, waste and recycled materials into industrial products and processes for the past 15 years. In this lecture, Stuart will look at the growing question currently being raised in many sectors as to whether new innovations are actually more sustainable than their predecessors. The interest in this area is largely being driven by both consumers, who are now more environmentally aware due to documentaries such as Blue Planet and A Plastic Ocean, and legislators, who are looking to reduce carbon emissions to meet targets set in the Paris Agreement at COP21. Stuart will show why assessments should focus on more than just the environmental issues as well as the need for clear, easy to understand systems that make sense to all stakeholders, linking throughout to previous and current research within Stuart’s group at WMG.
