Research Interests

My research interests are broadly in the areas of system identification, battery modelling, signal design, frequency response estimation and machine learning methods. These techniques and methodologies have the advantage that many engineering applications can be viewed as a general nonlinear or parameter varying dynamic system. As such, I am particularly interested in developing modelling techniques for battery dynamics and other physical processes by viewing them within a dynamic system framework and an inverse problem setting.


Dr Dhammika Widanalage is an Associate Professor at WMG University of Warwick and a Project Organiser with a visiting position at the Alan Turing Institute. He completed his PhD in system identification at Warwick University and a postdoctoral position at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium, where he developed frequency domain identification methods (Prof Schouken's Group) for industrial applications and in battery modelling (Prof. Van Mierlo's group). He has published papers in the areas of battery modelling, system identification and machine learning to predict battery end-of-life and received the WMG Early Career Researcher of the Year award (2016). He works closely with several UK OEMs and SMEs to translate his fundamental research to industry applications. Examples include with JLR, Aston Martin, McLaren, Varta (Germany), Heat Trace and Nobel Automotive.
